Acupuncture - Effective Treatment
According to a recent survey, 14 million Americans have experienced acupuncture treatments. Scientific interest in the efficacy of acupuncture is growing, and more and more studies are being produced that bolster consumer confidence in acupuncture as a treatment for many health complaints. The FDA regulates the use of acupuncture needles by licensed professionals, with standards for manufacturing and labeling, and requirements for sterility and single use. Risks associated with Chinese acupuncture are significantly lower than those related to commonly prescribed drugs and medical procedures.
In traditional Chinese medicine, there are energy pathways throughout the body, called meridians, through which flows a natural energy called “Qi,” or “Chi,” as it is pronounced. When there are blockages in this flow of energy, or if the flow of energy is weakened, disease and illness can occur. Acupuncture is applied along the meridians of Qi to release blockages and strengthen the flow of energy, so that natural healing can begin. Sometimes, effects are felt immediately, and in some cases, more than one treatment is required to stimulate healing.
In Western terms, acupuncture is thought to affect hormones and neurotransmitters by stimulating the central nervous system, and research continues to be done to identify just why and how acupuncture works. There have been favorable studies produced that recommend acupuncture treatment for osteoarthritis, fibromyalgia, chemotherapy induced nausea, post operative surgery pain, bladder control problems and infertility.
Chinese acupuncture is also recognized as a treatment for pain management. Over the long term, the use of painkillers is not sustainable, due to the side effects of continued use. Acupuncture can provide relief to those suffering from chronic and acute pain, as a complement to conventional medicine, or in some cases, when conventional treatments are not effective.
